HISD school receive scobee grant

Three Harlandale ISD elementary schools were recently awarded the Scobee Grant to provide students the opportunity to explore STEM subjects in a state-of-the-art learning environment.

Fifth grade students at Columbia Heights, Gilbert and Vestal Elementary Schools will be able to visit the Scobee Education Center, located at San Antonio College, and explore the Challenger Learning Center.

During their visit, students will “blast off” and participate in a simulated shuttle to Mars. Some students will be at the command center while others will be on the space shuttle. They will have to work together to complete several exciting missions throughout the day.

“We are extremely excited about this experience and grateful for the opportunity the grant is providing,” Columbia Heights Teacher Geoff Boggess said. “It will allow our students to gain insight into possible careers in science, math, technology and engineering.  We feel it will also enhance the students’ ability to communicate, work as a team, and to enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done.”

The schools are scheduled to visit the learning center in the spring.
