Harlandale ISD 2019 Convocation inspires and brings staff together for new school year

More than 1,400 Harlandale ISD leaders and teachers gathered at the Laurie Auditorium to celebrate the 2019 Convocation on Aug. 14.

The event kicked off with an inspiring video filled with a recap of students and teachers, reminding everyone in the room that “Together is Better” at Harlandale ISD.

The event was put together by the Harlandale ISD Communications Department and was emceed by Public Information Officer Albert Rosales-Korrea. A new surprise this year, STEM Early College High School seniors Sydney Aguilar and Victor Sanchez also helped co-emcee the fun-filled event.

Excitement filled the air as educators participated in the annual roll call, where they had the opportunity to show off their school spirit and kick off the new school year! Teachers were also surprised with energetic performances from the Harlandale ISD Mariachi and Harlandale HS Dance Team.

This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. Paul Hernandez – a nationally recognized, award-winning educator and trainer – who earned his doctorate in sociology specializing in the sociology of education, social inequality, and diversity.

Dr. Hernandez shared his own life story of perseverance and dedication overcoming the odds after living as an at risk youth engulfed in gang culture and deep poverty in the streets of Los Angeles.

His dynamic and inspiring personal story helped educators to see how they have the power to make a positive impact on the students they serve every day. He stated that to successfully teach struggling students, connection and trust must come first.

Educators also heard from Harlandale ISD Board of Trustees President Ricardo Moreno and Harlandale ISD Interim Superintendent Samantha Gallegos, who welcomed everybody back and shared a few words of encouragement.

“Look beyond the one to be truly inspired. We are family. Look to each other for strength and guidance. Look to wisdom and help. We will work together to ensure that at the end of each day, everything we do is about providing solid learning opportunities for students in Harlandale ISD,” Gallegos said. “Here is to an amazing school year, full of opportunities, success and satisfaction. And always remember, together is better. There is nothing that can stop this district from being the district that soars if we work together!”

Administrators and educators are ready to welcome students back on the first day of school, Aug. 26, 2019.
