Harlandale ISD honors teachers

Harlandale ISD celebrated the annual Teacher of the Year Banquet on May 2 at Harlandale High School. The event aligned perfectly with National Teacher Appreciation week celebrated May 1 – May 5.

The banquet, catered by Nicha’s, honored 23 HISD Campus Teachers of the Year and District Teacher of the Year Ann Brown. Each Teacher of the Year received a crystal apple award and Brown received a special plaque.

Before receiving her award, Brown was surprised with a heartfelt video showcasing why she is the District Teacher of the Year.

She was moved to tears and humbly thanked Superintendent Rey Madrigal, the Board of Trustees and her colleagues for the recognition.

“It’s an honor to represent Harlandale ISD and STEM Early College High School and I think I can speak for all of us here that we all know that it is not just one person,” Brown said. “We can’t do this by ourselves, it’s the custodians, it’s the cafeteria workers, it’s the receptionists, it’s the administrative assistants, the administration, everyone that works on the campus including families and the students themselves, they all contribute to the success.”

She thanked her principal Dr. Eddie Rodriguez in particular for encouraging the teachers to be creative and passionate about their work.

“I am grateful for all of the experiences I get every day in helping students navigate high school and college at the same time,” Brown added. “It is not easy, but it really is rewarding and I look forward to seeing what our students are going to be able to do in the future.”

She added that it felt odd to be singled out as someone special because she knows that all Harlandale ISD teachers do an amazing job every day.

The celebration continued throughout the week for all HISD teachers as they received words of encouragement and tokens of appreciation from students. The HISD Board of Trustees sent out cakes to all campuses on Wednesday.

“Our teachers selflessly invest countless hours preparing lessons, tutoring and volunteering their time for extracurricular activities,” Madrigal said. “They serve as daily role models for our students and act heroically when the situation requires ensuring the safety and security of our children.”
