Harlandale ISD seniors set to graduate with perfect attendance

Two Harlandale ISD seniors will be crossing the stage with a perfect attendance streak that began in Pre-K.

Harlandale High School senior Joshua Salazar and McCollum High School senior Chloe Gonzalez have never missed a day of school in the last 14 years.

For Joshua, the journey toward this achievement began with encouragement from his mom.

“At first it was my mom who was really pushing me to go to school every day, but I started maturing and realized that it would benefit me in the future so I decided to make it my personal goal to graduate with perfect attendance,” Joshua said.

Reaching this milestone was no easy feat and there were times when he wasn’t feeling good and he just wanted to stay home, but he never gave in.

“I thought about what the future held for me and I thought about college applications and how good it would look to say that I came to school every day because that shows hard work and dedication,” Joshua added. “I was also motivated to come to school and learn new things.”

Joshua will begin his road toward becoming a veterinarian by attending Palo Alto College in the fall.

Chloe’s perfect attendance streak also began with a little help from her mom, Antoinette Gonzalez, who is an assistant teacher at the Harlandale Alternative Center.

“It was important for Chloe to learn at a young age how important education is so she would be committed to education,” Gonzalez said. “I always told her that if she missed school she was only hurting herself and her future.”

That foundation led Chloe and her siblings toward a perfect attendance record. Her older sister who graduated in 2012 notched the same achievement and her younger brother, who is currently a sophomore at McCollum has had perfect attendance since Pre-K 3.

At first Chloe didn’t understand why she had to go to school every single day, but now she thanks her mom for instilling that mindset in her.

“Showing your commitment to education shows that you will be committed to other things in life,” Chloe said. “I feel really proud not only because I earned perfect attendance, but also because I was the only one in my school who did this.”

Both Joshua and Antoinette hope to keep the streak going in college.

Great job, seniors! You make Harlandale ISD proud.
