Wright Elementary Students in the Leadership-Enrichment-Academics-Partnerships (LEAP) extended day program had the opportunity to display their skating skills during a fun and exciting Skating Showcase on Oct. 22.

Proud parents and teachers looked on as more than 75 students ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade showed off what they had learned after school during the past six weeks.

“The students learned basic skating skills such as balance, coordination and stop and go,” HISD Extended Day Program Facilitator Nicole Garza said. “They also learned to be confident, persevere through their struggles of skating, how to be safe and to just have fun skating.”

Under the direction of Wright Elementary Teacher and LEAP Skating Enrichment instructor Diego Torres, the students put on their helmets, safety gear and inline skates before taking off. The students could not contain their excitement, flashing big, happy smiles, as they skated to the beat of the music playing in the background.

The Skating Showcase is one of the many family engagement activities offered through the Harlandale ISD after school programs. Each LEAP campus offers a variety of enrichment activities focused on fine arts, recreation, robotics, dance and gardening.

“It is important to offer a variety of enrichment to our extended day program students because this allows them to grow as a student outside of the classroom,” Garza concluded.

Way to go, LEAP students!
