More than 300 MHS seniors choose to further their education

Aloha Class of 2018! A total of 344 McCollum High School seniors proudly proclaimed their higher education plans during a luau-themed Decision Day on May 2.

Administrators, teachers, students and family members arrived at the Main Gym wearing colorful leis and floral shirts ready to celebrate Hawaiian style. Juniors were also invited and filled the gym bleachers to cheer on their fellow MHS Cowboys.

MHS Principal Jacob Garcia congratulated all the seniors and offered them some words of encouragement as they embark on the journey to continue their education.

“The next four years are going to be the best time of your life,” he said. “If you put a focus on what you want to do, where you want to be, your plan, it is going to be one of the greatest experiences of your life.”

Special guest Palo Alto College Vice President for Student Success Gilbert Becerra Jr. pumped up the crowd and told students to enjoy every moment of college.

To make it official, students signed a banner announcing where they will continue their higher education. Representatives from more than 10 institutions including the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps were present to welcome their future students.

The event also featured fun games, a student dance off and a gift basket raffle.

MHS College Advisor Lisa Reyes expressed how proud she is of the students’ commitment and determination to achieve their academic goals.

“They were dedicated, they did multiple scholarships and applications and found opportunities for themselves,” she said. “They don’t want to be another stereotype growing up as a Latino in the South Side of San Antonio, they want to make it big and have an opportunity to show what we can do and what the South Side of San Antonio is made of.”

Way to go, Cowboys!
