Olivia Robinson named District Teacher of the Year

District Teacher of the Year 2019

Middle School Teacher Olivia Robinson was named the 2018-2019 District Teacher of the Year.

Robinson, who teaches English Language Arts (ELA), was brought to tears when her students, colleagues and Leal MS Principal Ricardo Salmon congratulated her during a surprise assembly Friday morning.

The school’s gym was filled with cheers and applause from the students as they celebrated the news with their teacher. Robinson also received a special gift as a token of appreciation for her hard work.

“I love my job and I love these kids,” Robinson said with a big smile. “I enjoy making the kids laugh while also teaching them. English is such a tough subject and making it fun for them, seeing them laugh and engaged, is the best part.”

During her four years at Leal MS, Robinson has dedicated herself to teaching students to believe in themselves and to create a positive environment in which they can learn, grow and thrive.

Leal MS Principal Ricardo Salmon shared how Robinson’s determination and attitude have allowed her to connect with her students in a positive way.

“Ms. Robinson is always prepared, her lessons are always engaging, and the students love being in her class,” he said. “The way she connects with her kids, regardless of their background, is amazing. She can work with any kid. Whenever I need something done for the campus, whether it’s a volunteer effort or campus-wide initiative, she is one of my go-to people.”

Robinson’s passion for education stems from working with at-risk kids and making a difference in the community.

“I got into education to give students the experience that I was fortunate enough to have when I was a kid. My parents struggled as children, so they made sure to give me a really good experience growing up, and that’s what I want to pass on to these kids. These children need people who know that they can overcome obstacles and still become extremely successful in their lives.”

In addition to teaching, Robinson is the seventh-grade ELA team lead teacher, implemented a district Buddy Read program, organizes annual Family Literacy Nights and founded the student leadership organization IMPACT (Inspiring Our Middle School Peers As Conscious Teens) that works to improve the school and Leal community.

Congratulations, Ms. Robinson!
