Stonewall Flanders hosts Math Night

Parents and students enjoyed a night full of math and hands on activities at the Stonewall Flanders Cafeteria on Jan. 11.

Janice Garces, Stonewall Flanders math teacher and fifth grade level chair, organized the event with the intent of educating parents on how to help their students at home.

“Some of our students are struggling with problem solving, so we thought it would be a good to give our parents a little tutoring on how problem solving is done from lower grades to upper grades so they can see how it progresses,” Garces said.

All math grade level teachers and other dedicated school staff members were on hand to guide parents and students through the different workshops. At each station, parents learned different strategies they could use to help their child with homework.

“Some students don’t get support at home because parents don’t know problem solving strategies, so for us, it’s about showing parents and tutoring them on how to do it so that they can help their students at home,” Garces added.

Families were engaged throughout the night and left feeling more confident about their math skills.

Great job, Stonewall Flanders!
