Students strengthen math skills at Algebra Camp

More than 170 eighth-grade Algebra 1 students boosted their mathematical skills in a fun and engaging way during the fourth annual Super Algebra Camp held at St. Lawrence Church on April 10.

The camp took place on the same day of the eighth-grade STAAR exam since the Algebra 1 students are exempt from it and instead take an Algebra I end-of-course (EOC) exam next month.

“Since they don’t have to take the STAAR exam, it was important for us to offer them a day where they can continue their learning and not just sit in a classroom,” HISD Math Coordinator Gaby McMillian said. “We also wanted to reward them for essentially taking four years of math in just three years.”

Divided into different groups and wearing cool Superman-themed camp T-shirts, the students had the opportunity to preview the Texas Instruments TI-Nspire Handheld Graphing Calculator, which is what they will use in high school. Together, they also participated in various math problems and solved an algebra mystery to earn points. The first, second and third place winners received awesome prizes, including graphic calculators.

Math Teacher Edmundo Garza guided the students through every activity and other algebra teachers were on hand to assist the students as well.

“The teachers are wonderful,” McMillian added. “They do a fantastic job with these students and prepare them well to score high on the EOC.”

McMillian was happy to see all the students engaged and thanked her team for always organizing a successful event.

“Darlene Roebuck and Kim Northcutt have just done a super job every year, and they do so much to get it off the ground and running,” she said. “The kids really love it and talk about it with their teachers when they go back. They have a good time and enjoy meeting students from other campuses.”
