SAN ANTONIO – Dec. 31, 2019 – Harlandale Independent School District formally appointed Gerardo Soto as Superintendent of Schools December 30, 2019. He was named as the proposed lone finalist at the school board meeting on December 6 and the board of trustees approved his contract during a special called board meeting Monday night. He officially begins his duties as Superintendent on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2019.

Prior to his appointment as superintendent, Soto served as the District’s Executive Director for Maintenance and Operations and has worked in public education for 25 years. In that role, he oversaw departments at the core of Harlandale ISD’s mission to advance intricate district operations for its 14,000+ students. He is passionate about education and preparing all students for a college, career, military and work life.

Soto addressed the school board and community members present during the meeting thanking them for the opportunity to take on this role.

“I feel humbled and honored to be given this opportunity,” Soto said. “Harlandale is full of great teachers, leaders and families. Our students are exceptional and deserve nothing but the best to excel in all they do.”

Soto earned his bachelor of arts in exercise and sports science from St. Mary’s University, a master of science in educational administration from Texas A&M Kingsville and his superintendent certification from Texas A&M San Antonio.

School Board President Ricardo Moreno was pleased to make the official announcement and sees this as yet another step to work collaboratively as a team of eight to continue in providing the best for the students at Harlandale ISD.

“On behalf of the school board we are pleased to have someone like Mr. Soto to help us guide the district with the background and professional credentials he brings to the position,” Moreno said. “Together we will continue to put our emphasis on student outcomes and achievement and are eager to have him as the Harlandale ISD Superintendent.”
