Harlandale ISD honors veterans at football game

Harlandale ISD celebrated and honored the service of local veterans before the McCollum High School vs. Martin High School football game with a special reception and ceremony on Oct. 25.

Following a meet and greet reception, where the veterans shared stories about their service, the brave men made their way to the football track to be recognized in front of the home crowd.

The celebratory event was filled with smiles and cheers as the McCollum HS JROTC Color Guard presented the National and Texas flags along with the flags of the Armed Forces, POW/MIA and Unit Flags.

As each branch of the military was called, veterans proudly walked underneath the Sabers while music representing each branch was played. Veterans saluted the flags and shook hands with district administrators and board members present.

“Our veterans have sacrificed so much for this country asking little to nothing in return. Honoring them is simply the right thing to do,” McCollum HS Senior Army Instructor Lt. Col. (Ret.) Charles Burton said. “I am truly thankful that in the midst of all the excitement that Friday night lights and high school football brings, that we've reserved a moment to remember and honor our veterans.”

There was also a special recognition made out to the attending service men and women that were seated in the stands during the ceremony.

“I would like to thank the district in their continued support to honor veterans from our past to the present,” McCollum High School JROTC Army Instructor Sgt. Maj. (Ret.) Frederick Carmicle said. “Veterans Day serves as a constant reminder that somewhere there’s a soldier defending and protecting our values and freedom. The true test comes on the battlefield, but most importantly, when soldiers return to a warm embrace that reconfirms the commitment and sacrifice made for our country.”

Harlandale ISD thanks all veterans for their bravery, service and tremendous sacrifice. This is an annual event for the district, and veterans are encouraged to attend and participate every year. For more information, please call the Communications Office at (210) 989-4355.
