MHS Theatre presents fantasy-comedy ‘She Kills Monsters’

The McCollum High School Theatre Arts Department will present the dramatic comedy “She Kills Monsters” on Nov. 21.

The play, based upon the book by Qui Nugyen, tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly’s “Dungeons & Dragons” notebook, however, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly’s refuge. Filled with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, and 90s pop culture, “She Kills Monsters” promises a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all.

“I think the show really speaks to the students, and they have really connected with it,” McCollum High School Theatre Director Kevin Cox said. “The kids are excited, and we hope the audience enjoys it too because it’s very sweet and funny.”

For senior Lauren Navaira, playing the role of Agnes has been a fun yet challenging opportunity.

“At first, it was hard to figure out what kind of person she is because she’s described as super plain and wishes for her life to be less boring, but it’s been so much fun,” Lauren said. “I hope the audience enjoys the show as much as we have because even though there is a lot of fun stage combats and a fantasy world, the show is also about not taking your loved ones for granted and not judging others by the way they may seem.”

The show will take place in the school’s auditorium next Thursday at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for students.
