WHAT IS SHAC?
The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is an advisory group comprised of individuals who represent segments of the community. The group acts collectively to provide advice to the HISD Administration on aspects of the school district’s health program. Generally, the members of SHAC are appointed by the Board of Trustees.

WHAT DOES SHAC DO?
The SHAC has a variety of roles addressing all components of a comprehensive School Health Program. The components include:
- Health Instruction
- Healthful School Environment
- Health Services
- Physical Education
- School Counseling
- Food Service
- Health Promotion for Staff
- Integrated School and Community Programs
WELLNESS POLICY
One of the responsibilities of the SHAC is to assist in the development of nutrition guidelines and wellness goals. These guidelines should advance student health and reduce childhood obesity and promote the general wellness of all students through nutrition education, physical activity, and other school-based activities.
MISSION STATEMENT
The Mission of Harlandale ISD SHAC will be to advise and advocate to the HISD school board of trustees and administration that our children are provided with accurate, relevant, and age-appropriate educational programs that will motivate them to live healthy, happy, and productive lives.
